Three steps to build true cultural agility:
- Self-discovery: Self-awareness is key to cultivating cultural agility. You must discover your level of tolerance toward ambiguity. Understanding your comfort level with change and ambiguity sets the stage for personal growth.
- Gain cross-cultural training: Prepare your brain for what you will find. Go through basic cultural training about differences, to understand things abroad. You will also be less likely to resort to stereotypes. By expanding your cultural knowledge, you’ll be equipped to navigate cross-cultural encounters with finesse.
- Seek high-quality intercultural experiences: It is important to have real interactions with local people. You could do this with help from a bicultural friend or by engaging in projects involving multicultural teams or venturing into cross-cultural consulting. These opportunities allow you to apply your new competencies and awareness in real-life scenarios.
These are all covered in MyGiide! If you want to learn more about Cultural Agility here is a video with Paula Caligiuri a researcher and creator of the test to evaluate your skills through myGiide.
