Global Brigades started its programming in Greece at the invitation of the United Nations International Office of Migration and in partnership with the Greek Health Department. Chapters have the unique ability to see the work of the Urban Clinic in Athens, which provides free, consistent health coverage to refugees and asylum seekers.

A Brief History of Greece 
  • Cradle of Western Civilization: Greece is the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, and major scientific principles.
  • Byzantine Period: Modern Greece was divided into 8 provinces during the 4th century. The country saw a significant transformation with the establishment of Constantinople as the new imperial capital in 330.
  • Independence: Greece gained formal recognition as an independent state in 1832, becoming the first subject people of the Ottoman Empire to achieve full independence.


The Culture, Demographics, and Geography of Greece

  • Greece's terrain is predominantly mountainous, dotted with peninsulas and islands of various sizes. It is surrounded by the Aegean, Ionian, and Cretan seas.

  • Greece's population of over 10,700,000 is 98% Greek, with small minorities that include Turks, Albanians, Macedonians, Aromanians, Arvanites, and Pomaks.

  • Greece's economy is diverse but relies heavily on tourism, shipping, agriculture (especially olives and olive oil), and services. These sectors play crucial roles in Greece's GDP composition and employment.
