Guidelines for Using the Tax ID
Guidelines to protect the credibility of Global Brigades’ tax-exempt status.
Chapters are permitted and encouraged to use Global Brigades’ Tax ID when soliciting donations from local businesses, community organizations, or locally operated franchises of national brands (e.g., a local Costco, Chipotle, or credit union).
To ensure alignment and avoid duplicate requests, the following guidelines apply:
Allowed
-
Soliciting local businesses, restaurants, shops, community foundations, and local branches/franchises of national companies.
-
Applying for small, location-based sponsorships or community-giving programs (e.g., local store donation requests, community grant applications, fundraising nights, etc.).
-
Providing the GB Tax ID for donations made directly to Global Brigades in support of the chapter’s fundraising efforts.
Requires Notification
-
When a chapter plans to apply to a national-level corporate program, grant, or foundation (one that serves multiple regions/states OR requests organizational documents such as Form 990s, board lists, audited financials, or national impact data).
-
When the request exceeds $5,000 OR could overlap with a relationship already being managed by the GB Partnerships team.
Chapters must email steve@globalbrigades.org before applying so GB can confirm there is no conflict and provide any required supporting documents.
Not Allowed
-
Applying to a corporation, foundation, or national grant program on behalf of Global Brigades without prior approval.
-
Representing the chapter as its own nonprofit or using the Tax ID for any purpose other than fundraising for Global Brigades programs.
-
Signing grant agreements, sponsorship contracts, or MOUs in the name of Global Brigades without GB staff review.
